Have a Strategy for Your Strategy
Leaders are encouraged to lead by culture management. I call leaders that have successful culture management experiences, Culture Management Strategists (CMS). What are the behaviors of a CMS? Effective Culture Management Strategist demonstrate the ability to monitor, manage, care for, and update their cultural forces. Promoting this notion of managing culture is important but creating the environment and structures to do so is even more important (For more information, read my article, From Tall to Matrix: Redefining Organizational Structures in Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning Vol. 48, Is. 4,2016). One way to stimulate the culture is to send regular surveys that ask employees for ideas on how to strengthen specific cultural elements. Another idea is to create a culture task force or committee in which interested stakeholders plan events and programs. Remember, organizational cultures can be fickle, even if the culture loves you today, but as with any unhappy lover, the culture may try to kick you out tomorrow.
